Egypt: Day 5
September 20, 2022

Above: A field in the desert being irrigated with water from the Nile aqueducts, plus a bunch of trucks parking by the aqueduct for some reason.

1 shows part of an incredibly long line of trucks just sitting by the side of the road in front of a military checkpoint, not sure why.

2 to 5 show the town of Abu Simbel.

6 and 7 show Lake Nasser as we enter the Abu Simbel Temple area.

8 to 11 diagram the Abu Simbel area. By 1959, the waters of Lake Nasser were rising and threatened to engulf the Abu Simbel temples. An effort was
made to save them and other Nubian monuments (those in southern Egypt and northern Sudan). The temples were cut into 1042 massive blocks
starting in 1964, moved up the mountain about 65 metres, about 200 metres (actually 180 metres) northwest of the original temples. Concrete domes
were created to house each temple, rock and sand were put on top to resemble mountains, the temples placed inside. Work was completed by 1968.
