Above: The Romans During The Decadence (Roman Orgy), by Thomas Couture, 1847. The largest painting at Musée d'Orsay is based on the Roman poet Juvenal from the early 2nd century "Crueller than war, vice descended on Rome and avenged the conquered world". It was an allegory of the decadence of France's July Monarchy of 1830, later overthrown by Revolution in 1848, after the completion of this painting.
