Above: The Louvre Museum ... originally Royal residence for the French Monarchy between the 14th and 18th centuries, turned into a museum in 1793.



1 to 3 show the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, built by Napoleon 1806-1808 to commemorate military victories ... the more famous Arc de Triomphe
de l'Étoile was started in 1806 as well, but completed in 1836, long after Napoleon's banishment to Saint Helena and death in 1821.

4 to 6 show the Pyramid in the Louvre, completed in 1984, designed by Chinese-American I.M. Pei, controversial when it was unveiled.

7 and 8 show the Louvre wall by the Colbert Pavillion, holding statues of famous French, such as painter Poussin and philosopher Rousseau.

10 is the Pont des Arts footbridge and the Institut de France at the end, including the Académie Française, whose job it is to preserve the French
language, such as whether new words should be masculine or feminine.
