Above: The map of the areas excavated in Ancient Akrotiri, as estimated 3% of the ancient city. No people have been found in the excavated regions, and it is unknown whether the residents left before,
because reportedly the volcano was active prior to the big eruption, or whether they are huddled in another part of the city, perhaps somewhere down by the island coast.

1, 8 and 9 are nippled ewer jugs from the 17th century BC. Why the nipples? These jugs were used to hold drinks, but they often used in fertiliy rituals, hence the pseudo female breasts.

2 is an example of pithoi, a large storage vessel to some liquid, usually identifiable by the motif drawing on the outside. This vessel, with its olive branches, was to hold olive oil.

3 to 6 show wall frescoes. #3 are rosettes found in several homes in Akrotiri. #4, 5 and 6 came from the House of the Ladies, one of Papyrus or Lilies, the other two of ladies.

7 is a dolphin and lily pithoi from the 17th century BC.
