There were two doors at the main (and only) entry gate into Fort Wellington. Each door was made of two layers of treated wood, one set going up and down, the other set going across for better strength. It would take about a day to burn through one door, and then the enemy would have to get through the second. until 1863, when British units left the area, making the militia the fort's sole occupant. The militia continued to use the fort until 1923.
