Sao Miguel

On Day 8, Andy, Donna and myself started our day going underground in the Gruta do Carvao lava tube, which stretches 0.56 km on the Rua da Palm section we walked in, but in total, the tube is close to 5 km (not all of it accessible). We then drove towards central Sao Miguel, driving through the small town of Franca do Campo before arriving at Lagoa das Furnas (Furnas Lake). A short drive later was the town of Furnas, which like the lake, is inside the crater of an active volcano that last erupted in 1630, and is still bubbling. There, we visited the Parque Terra Nostra gardens, the Thermal Spa of Furnas and the hot springs of Caldeira das Furnas, with plenty of boiling water spewing out, before heading back for pina coladas in Ponta Delgada.

1 to 12 show inside the Gruta do Carvao lava tube. The walls and ceiling are multi-coloured (orange to yellowish) due to the oxidization of basalt.
