Sao Miguel
September 22, 2023

On Day 7, Andy, Donna traveled to the central part of São Miguel. We started by driving from Sao Miguel to Lagoa do Fogo, which actually means Lake of Fire, but Lake of Fog is more like it. It is a crater lake within the Vulcão do Fogo stratovolcano (a conical volcano built up by many layers (strata) of hardened lava) in the center of the island. We then drove to Caldeira Velha, near Lagoa do Fogo, for a small hike and visit to hot springs and thermal baths. Then it was lunch time, and a trip to Ribeira Grande's Restaurante O Silva, with a massive plate of grilled squid (I prefer squid and octopus grilled). After lunch, we did a very brief hike around Ponta do Cintrão Lighthouse before returning to Taberna Açor in Ponta Delgada for some delicious seafood ... fish soup, clams, salad and sangria for me.

2 to 7 shows our drive to the Água de Alto area ... we considered the hike up to Lagao do Fogo but 8 km uphill, and then back, we passed.

8 to 10 shows us in Remédios leaving for Lagoa do Fogo.
