Our group first visited an Orthodox Icons shop, where machine and hand-made Christian icons were painted and created. Then it was a drive up the Meteora, rock formations
hosting Eastern Orthodox monasteries. Twenty-four monasteries were established
atop the natural pillars and hill-like rounded boulders, created mainly during the second half of the 14th century. Four of the original monasteries are in active use as monasteries
that are managed by monks, and open to visitors ... Great Meteoron (est. 1356), Varlaam, Agia Triada (Holy Trinity), and Agios Stefanos (St. Stephen). Agios Stefanos actually became a convent in 1961.
Two other former monasteries no longer in active use as monasteries, but can be visited: the Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas Anapafsas and Roussanou. Our group visited Agios Stefanos
and Roussanou.
After visiting the monasteries, our bus made the long trek back to Athens.
