Above: Berat Castle was built in the 4th century by the Illyrians, but after being burned down by the Romans in 200 BC, the walls were strengthened in the 5th century AD, and then the 6th century, and once again in the 13th century. There were 20 churches in the fortress, including the Church of St. Mary of Blachernae and the Church of St. Nicholas, and the Red Mosque. The Ottomans took over in the early 1500's and they completed the White Mosque. The Pasha at the time was paranoid and built a 3rd set of walls in the interior of the fortress, with it's own cistern.
