Nothing To Lose
_____
_____ ____ Starring Martin Lawrence, Tim Robbins, Kelly Preston, Giancarlo Esposito, John McGinley. Directed by Steve Oedekerk.

The story begins begins with an upper-middle class advertising exec Nick Beam (Robbins) coming home early from work to find his gorgeous wife engaging in extra-marital gymnastics, with it's his boss on the receiving end. A dazed Robbins takes off in his Yukon when a an armed young thug T. Paul (Lawrence) trys to hijack the vehicle, but is taken on a high speed ride to Arizona. After a couple of fights and a convenience store robbery by T. Paul, the boys decide that they would team up to make one big robbery of Nick's bosses private vault as a way to get back at the boss and Nick's wife.

The trailer for Nothing To Lose has been playing for several months. I've seen it at least 5 or 6 times, and I broke out laughing every time. Which means I was expecting to be disappointed, because more often than not, the best bits are put in the trailer, and the rest of the movie has little else. And for me, Martin Lawrence's show Martin is unwatchable - an brutally unfunny noisefest. But I was very pleasantly surprised. I was laughing from beginning to end. Robbins and Lawrence are both great. Their chemistry and timing are amazing. The bulk of the humour is from slapstick (usually not my favourite kind) that is inventive and hilarious. Lawrence gets most of the best lines, and many of them are very funny, although since this is Martin Lawrence, there is a generous amount of swearing. The movie never lags - the plot moves quickly, and the quieter spots always have a purpose in setting up the next funny sequence. Don't expect strict adherence to realism - some developments, such as the easy way Nick gets out of a security camera jam strains credibility a bit. And as the movie develops, T. Paul is shown not as an aimless thug, but as a bright guy trying to find a job to financially support his family. But the social commentary is minimal and not at all intrusive in the movie. It is not a thought- provoking kind of movie, but one just for laughs. And there's lots of them.
