St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School, Brampton, Ontario

Andrea Horwath and Jagmeet Singh
March 13, 2015

Brampton MPP Jagmeet Singh and leader of the Ontario NDP Party, Andrea Horvath, spent a couple of hours with several classes of students. They both took questions from the students. Mr. Singh talked about such things as the sharply rising cost in secondary education, where he spent about $8000 in tuition for a year at law school, while his brother had to pay double that only 5 years later while studying law. Ms. Horwath talked about her experience in politics, starting out on Hamilton city council, and making the move into provincial politics in partly in response to the Mike Harris Tories downloading a variety of costs onto municipalities. She was asked whether she supported maintaining funding for Catholic schools. Ms. Horwath responded that the party recently debated the issue, and while there was support for going to one public education system, the majority wished to continue NDP policy supporting the status quo of maintaining funding for the Catholic system, which she said she herself agrees with. She said that while she was on Hamilton council, six municipalities in the Hamilton area amalgamated with promises of significant cost savings. Those financial savings never happened, but a lot of resentment and bad feeling did, so she is skeptical of the promised savings in amalgamating the public and Catholic school systems. Then I went to class and missed the rest, but several students said they enjoyed meeting her at the end of the presentation. Here are a few pictures.
